British nationals will be required to pay to enter Europe for visits

The European Commission has confirmed that British nationals as well as all other visa-exempt non-EU citizens will have to get authorisation to enter the Schengen zone.

The authorisation will apply to all travellers, tourists, or groups travelling to EU countries for stays of less than 90 days.

European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will come into life before the end of 2022 and will work similarly to the US ESTA. The automated IT system will be created to identify security, irregular migration or high epidemic risks posed by visa-exempt visitors travelling to the Schengen countries. All non-EU nationals who do not need a visa to travel to the Schengen area will have to apply for a travel authorisation through the ETIAS system before their trip.

The authorisation cost will be €7 if granted and it will be for stays shorter than 90 days. It will be valid for multiple entries for 3 years.

After completing an online application form, the system will conduct checks against EU information systems for borders and security and the traveller will get, in the majority of cases, a travel authorisation at the time of application. In few cases, where further checks on the traveller are required, the issuing of the travel authorisation would take longer (up to 30 days).

Applicants between the ages of 18 and 70 will be required to pay the cost of the application. The under 18 will still need to get the authorisation that can be done the same way as for adults and can be submitted by the parents/legal guardians on behalf of the minor.

EC aims to introduce this a simple, fast and visitor-friendly system by the end of 2022, starting with a transitional period to get the visitors to EU countries and carriers who will be responsible for checking the status of the ETIAS authorisation to get accustomed to the process.
