Covid-19 and ELT market Ireland

A recent survey by the Progressive College Network asked over 1000 students from 27 different language schools in Ireland about their intentions regarding studying in Ireland. Nearly two thirds (63 per cent) of English language students in Ireland intend to remain in Ireland to work or study despite Covid-19, out of this number 19 per cent of asked students intend to stay and work and 44 per cent aim to go on further study.

The results reflect the profile of the typical English language student who is well educated and with professional experience. The contribution of these students is very important. They do not have only economic impact but also social impact as they contribute to communities by studying further, seek employment and many are part of the frontline workers during the pandemic.

The study found out that a significant number of students are now filled roles important during the pandemic with 29% in cleaning/maintenance work, 28% in hospitality and catering, and 11% in retail and customer services.

In recent months the Progressive College Network (PCN) has been arguing with the Irish government whether language schools should deliver full-time in-person classes.

PCN warned that in-person classes could put everyone in danger, both school staff and the students. Currently, most of the schools deliver online courses or a mix of online and in-person lessons whenever possible.

The respondents of the survey were also asked about their experience and 42 per cent of them valued the experience of Ireland as opening and welcoming. This shows that Ireland is a leading destination for English language students from around the world and attracts over 130,000 students each year for courses lasting from one week to a full academic year.

The sector employs over 3,000 permanent workers, and a further 7,000 part-time or seasonal staff, and is worth an estimated €1.2bn to the Irish economy each year.
