Most of the international students who decide to study in Canada will rely on part-time jobs for their financial expenses. The government has rules that allow international students to work up to 20 hours per week if they meet certain requirements.

All international students who wish to work have to make sure they are allowed to start working off-campus without a work permit.

The conditions of a student’s study permit will indicate whether the student is allowed to work.

The students who are allowed to work must meet the following requirements:

  • being a full-time student at a designated learning institution (DLI)
  • enrolled in a post-secondary academic, vocational or professional training program or
  • a secondary-level vocational training program (Quebec only)
  • attend a study program that is at least 6 months long and leads to a degree, diploma or certificate
  • the student has started studying
  • student has a Social Insurance Number (SIN)
